Jeffrey Bernard (1932-1997) was an English writer and journalist, best known for his columns in the Spectator magazine. He was a heavy drinker and spent much of his life as a chronic alcoholic, which often got him into trouble and would frequently miss his deadlines. His columns were mostly autobiographical, centering on the Soho area of London, his relationships, his drinking habits, and his generally dissolute lifestyle. His most famous column was “Low Life,” which ran in the Spectator from 1978 until his death in 1997. Bernard was also a keen gambler, and his columns often included accounts of his betting exploits.
